When we launched Pitch Pulse, the goal was simple: create a highly curated pipeline connecting early-stage founders with California’s innovation ecosystem. A successful pitch is only as strong as the feedback it receives. For our Maritime session, we brought in top tier industry experts to evaluate our founders and provide actionable, real world insights.

We were absolutely honored to have two incredible leaders from the marine and academic innovation space join our judging panel:

The Solar Sense Journey

Meet Adama Toure, the founder of Solar Sense. His journey has taken him across the globe, from Guinea to Portland, and finally finding a home in San Diego. Driven by his early childhood experiences, Adama is building the safety and intelligence layer for decentralized energy systems. He is starting with a smart device that keeps rooftop solar safer during emergency situations.

For Adama, the mission is deeply personal. Growing up in Guinea, he witnessed the daily struggles of living with unreliable power, where families often had to rely on dangerous lighting alternatives.

Every global vision needs a strong local foundation. Adama was introduced to the JANUS Innovation Hub at a critical time in his startup journey. Through JANUS, the Solar Sense team found the strategic support they needed to refine their business model and unlock game changing opportunities.

Most importantly, JANUS connected Adama to Plug and Play. Today, he is in China participating in a six month program to manufacture his product and scale his vision in the world's largest solar market. Once this phase is complete, he will bring the fully matured product back to the US.

The next major milestone? Partnering with manufacturers to bring Solar Sense Pro to universities, helping students and researchers accelerate global PV research and innovation.

In our latest interview, we sat down with Grace Callahan, Co Founder and CXO of neuromatch®, to talk about completely reimagining the hiring process. Grace shared her journey from studying psychology to working directly with the autism community, and how those experiences revealed a massive flaw in modern recruitment.

In our latest conversation, we sat down with Hala Madanat from San Diego State University (SDSU). She shared her groundbreaking vision for moving universities beyond traditional education and turning them into dynamic engines of regional economic growth.

Here is a quick look at our conversation:

Q: You are building a new innovation center at SDSU. Can you tell us about this vision and how it helps the ecosystem? 

Hala Madanat: We are building a pathway for innovation right in the center of the city. It connects everything from K-12 and community colleges to university talent, while building entrepreneurship activities throughout. To accelerate fields like neurotechnology, you need to bring different disciplines and companies together in one spot—from clinical populations to AI centers and neuroimaging. By putting this entire ecosystem together, we move things faster.

Q: Do you think universities are redefining their roots and their role in the world today? 

Hala Madanat: Yes. At some point, U.S. universities lost their pathway by seeing themselves strictly as workforce development. The reality is that universities are also engines of economic development. If we produce talent but there are no jobs in the region, what is that good for? Our focus now is on how many startups we are producing, how many jobs we are creating, and how we are building innovation partnerships with industry.
